Our Story
We are three women brought together by a shared fascination with objects left behind, and the spaces they take up in modern life. The founder is a practising traditional witch, whose life is interwoven with the traditions of the craft. Another is an artist and animator, bringing the objects and inspiration together. Finally we have an art historian, a collector of curious things.
Between us we years search bookshops, auction houses, country sales and forgotten corners for the kinds of pieces that rarely fit neatly into a category. What interests us is the sense that an object has lived a life of meaning before it reaches our hands. We are drawn to things that have been used, treasured, believed in, repaired, carried, hidden away and rediscovered. In particular we seek out works that write the history of the witchcraft and the occult.
The name Waters and the Wild comes from the old liminal places where stories gather: rivers, woods, crossroads and thresholds. In our telling, these places are inhabited by the Malekin, a wandering figure who appears throughout our world as a guide, collector and occasional trickster. He reminds us that the most interesting discoveries are often found just beyond the familiar path.
Everything you find here has been chosen because we loved it first.
Here live I, Malekin, the spirit assist
I was stolen to behold the treasures of fairyland.
Perhaps I ate or drank with them and forgot that time exists,
freed from that cascade of sand.
Now, by night, I dance through waters and through wild,
searching for a human child
to keep me company and seek
all these trinkets I love to keep
hidden in the dark mud, as if a sunken golem
to be birthed again. Seek I the liminal beings
to spake with me with cackles, calls and solemn
face. These witches, foreseeing
how we can charm the human land
by calling arcane treasures back to set them free
so magic grows, by fae and witches’ hand
till, once again, the world sings a symphony of sorcery.
