The Goddess Tarot by Kris Waldherr (1990s)
On we go, to this multicultural dance of Goddesses where we find ourselves on our knees before the great Isis, chin raised in strength and arms crossed before her chest, a hawk perching on one hand. Behind her, the walls echo the colour of the fiery carnelian, once known as Isis’ blood.
We follow, as the hawk takes flight - straight through to the calm dusky purple of The Star, where Inanna stands before a circle of stars. Before her, stand two winged lions, a touch of the medieval about their faces. You reach for the crescent moon, floating just above her outstretched hand. We are surprised to meet Goddesses we barely know, Nyi Rara Kidul in the fierce Indian Ocean, rolling waves the colour of jade; Kuan Yin on beauteous pink clouds, the sun on one side and the moon on the other; The slavic Zorya as three sisters with crowns and waist-long braids.
I know you like a little depth to your explorations, so come, see the deck holds Four Paths to explore. Each path corresponds to the four suits and the four elements, as well as lighting your way to work with a Goddess. The Suit of Cups is the Path of Venus; Suit of Staves is the Path of Freyja; Suit of Swords is the Path of Isis; and Suit of Pentacles is the Path of Lakshmi. This deck calls to the one who wants finer details, who will press their eye to the borders to read the clues of each Goddess there. It asks for a reader who will sing with a whole chorus of voices, but give each its solo.
